In 2024 in the U.S., speeding was a key factor in 10,203 fatal motor vehicle crashes, an average of nearly 28 lives lost every day due to reckless driver behavior.
This study will make it clear that America’s speeding obsession is not only highly dangerous but pointless, since the gains made from breaking the speed limit lead (at best) to minimal amounts of time saved. We’ll consider state speeding differentials, and look at those most at risk of speeding crashes and fatalities.
First, let’s consider “the 54-second myth” and the false belief that speeding can actually save drivers significant amounts of time.
Speeding In The United States: Not Worth The Risk
The 54-Second Myth
Americans often drive over the speed limit to save time. And yet, at best, the end result is minimal time savings. A University of Minnesota study that analyzed 120 million vehicle trips found that if every driver observed posted speed limits, the average commuter traveling 28.6 miles would arrive just 54 seconds later than a speeding driver. So, less than a minute saved for breaking the law and putting lives in danger.
Unlike that real-world average, which reflects trips slowed by traffic lights, congestion, and stops, the following figures isolate speed’s effect under uninterrupted, best-case driving conditions.
The study also underscores a significant paradox: the faster the road, the less time speeding saves. By driving 10mph over a 35mph limit, a driver can (under optimal conditions) cut a journey by around six minutes. Yet the same 10mph increase along a 65 mph road saves less than two minutes, with higher baseline speeds producing diminishing returns.
Put simply, drivers regularly risk a fatal crash to save less than a minute. This makes speeding a clear example of a high-risk behavior that yields a disproportionately low-value reward.
Speeding Fatalities: How States Compare
Of the 10,203 fatal motor vehicle crashes caused by speeding recorded in the United States in 2024, Texas recorded the highest number (1,346, 13% of the national total).
Close behind were California (1,031) and North Carolina (616): all three states combined accounted for nearly 30% of all fatal speeding crashes (despite representing a significantly smaller overall share of U.S. traffic). Pennsylvania, Arizona, Illinois, South Carolina, New York, Florida and Georgia completed the speeding-fatality top 10, which combined represented over 53% of the national total.
Rankings by proportion of the population reveal a different hierarchy. By this measure, Montana featured the nation’s highest rate: 7.2 fatal speeding crashes per 100,000 residents. Close behind were Wyoming (7.1) and New Mexico (6.4), both significantly above the national average (just under 3 per 100,000).
South Carolina (6.2) was fourth, while North Carolina’s score (5.4) meant it was among the highest-scoring states for both raw total and per-capita rate. Oklahoma, Arizona, Alabama, Missouri and Vermont completed the top 10.
Despite recording high total numbers of fatal speeding crashes, Texas (4.2) and California (2.6) ranked much lower proportionally, emphasizing the fact that their high totals are largely due to their population sizes. And while less populous states with long rural highways (Montana, Wyoming and New Mexico) carry a disproportionate fatal crash burden, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Alabama rank highly by both raw numbers and per capita rates, indicating serious and persistent speeding problems.
Faring much better safety-wise, Rhode Island, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Ohio recorded some of the country’s lowest per-capita rates, which may in part indicate that comparatively heavy congestion may reduce the chances of fatal high-speed crashes.
The gulf between the dangerous and safe parts of the U.S. is significant: Texas recorded roughly 96 times as many fatal speeding crashes as Rhode Island, while Montana’s per-capita rate is almost six times higher than Rhode Island’s.
In 2024, speeding-related crashes killed 11,288 people across the United States. That’s more than the 10,203 fatal speeding crashes recorded because some crashes involved multiple fatalities. On average, each fatal speeding crash resulted in 1.11 deaths, just over 30 fatalities every day.
State rankings for deaths largely mirrored fatal crash patterns. Texas recorded the highest number of speeding-related deaths (1,496), followed by California (1,139) and North Carolina (676). Arizona, Pennsylvania, Illinois, South Carolina, New York, Florida, and Georgia completed the top ten, which collectively accounted for nearly 54% of all U.S. speeding-related deaths.
Per-capita-wise, Montana recorded the highest death rate at 7.73 deaths per 100,000 residents, followed by Wyoming (7.11) and New Mexico (6.97). South Carolina (6.94) and North Carolina (5.96) followed, with Arizona, Oklahoma, Alabama, Vermont and Missouri completing the top ten.
These rates were well above the national average (3.29 per 100,000); Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Florida, New Jersey and Ohio recorded the lowest rates, generally at or below half the national average.
Seasonal Danger Differences
May (962 fatal crashes; 1,063 fatalities) was the deadliest month, followed by September (946 crashes, 1,038 fatalities) and August (941 crashes, 1,038 fatalities). Increased travel (and a vacation spike), longer daylight hours, and warmer weather contribute to the high numbers. By contrast, February recorded the fewest deaths and crashes (680 crashes, 762 fatalities).
Overall, the data clearly shows that speeding is one of America’s most significant (and preventable) causes of traffic fatalities. Whether we measure by raw totals or population-adjusted rates, there are clear improvements to be made, particularly in high-danger states.
Stronger enforcement during peak travel months and safer road design in busy and rural high-speed corridors would save lives, as would the broader recognition that speeding is one of the leading preventable causes of death on U.S. roads.
Crash Types: Property Damage, Injury Collisions and Fatal Crashes
In 2024 in the U.S., if we factor in all crash types, speeding contributed to an estimated 592,753 motor vehicle crashes. Property damage-only crashes made up the largest share (368,854, or 62%), followed by injury crashes (213,696, or 36%). The 10,203 fatal crashes caused by speeding accounted for 1.7%.
So, for every fatal speeding crash, there were around 21 injury crashes and 36 property-damage crashes. Clearly, speeding crashes are an everyday risk, with catastrophic events relatively rare.
Yet the varying types of speeding crashes are subject to seasonal differences. For example, both fatal and injury crashes peaked in May, likely reflecting increased travel and longer daylight hours. Yet for property damage crashes, January represented the peak, accounting for around 16% of the year’s property-damage speeding crashes.
Slippery winter conditions exacerbate low-severity crashes due to reduced grip and poor visibility, while dry summer conditions accommodate higher speeds that compound crash severity.
Simply put, speeding risk evolves throughout the year. Yet from winter fender benders to fatal summer collisions, it remains a constant, preventable safety issue.
Crash Speeds
The speed of vehicles involved in fatal crashes reveals a nuanced risk picture. Of the 56,011 vehicles involved in fatal crashes in 2024, we have a confirmed travel speed for 19,040. In most cases, fatal crash speeds were close to relevant limits: 55mph was the most popular (2,417 vehicles), followed by 45 mph (1,904), then 60, 65, 70, 50, 40, and 35mph. So most fatal crashes occur at or close to legally posted limit speeds.
Nonetheless, an alarming proportion of vehicles crashed while exceeding those limits. In fact, 19% of crashed vehicles with known speeds (there were 3,664 in total) were traveling above 70mph. Over 1,000 were recorded traveling over 90mph; 587 exceeded 100mph and three vehicles massively exceeded limits by traveling at 151 mph. At such high speeds, small errors are often fatal.
The type of road in question is another significant factor. Of the 39,254 traffic deaths in 2024, 40.8% occurred on rural roads, with 58.4% occurring on urban roads.
Yet an area’s population can change the complexion of the data: rural areas, which feature just 20% of the American population, account for over 40% of deaths, more than double their proportionate share. Higher speed limits, comparatively poor lighting, fewer barriers, longer emergency response times and a high number of undivided highways mean rural crashes are more likely to involve fatalities.
Speed limits changes have also increased danger levels. The federal 55mph speed limit (introduced in 1974) was raised to 65mph in 1987; in 1995, speed limit control was returned to states.
Today, Texas allows speeds of up to 85mph on some of its rural toll roads, while Montana, Wyoming, Utah, South Dakota, and Nevada allow 80mph speeds on rural interstates. Montana and Wyoming, both of which feature high per capita speeding fatality rates, also feature some of the country’s highest speed limits.
State-level data reinforces this link: Montana, which recorded the highest per capita speeding fatality rate in the U.S., saw 79.1% of its traffic deaths occur on rural roads. Wyoming followed with 74.8% of its deaths occurring on rural roads; for New Mexico, the rate was 63.6%. By contrast, Massachusetts had the lowest rural traffic death share (8.3%), reflecting its dense, urban environment.
Overall, road design and speed limits play a key role in determining where fatal crashes occur. Rural highways designed for higher speeds (yet which offer fewer protections) feature a disproportionate share of deaths, further highlighting the importance of targeted investment when it comes to road lighting, barriers and enforcement.
Total traffic deaths and speeding deaths are not always aligned. Tennessee recorded more overall traffic deaths in 2024 (1,197) than Alabama (962), yet Alabama featured more speeding-related deaths (278, compared to 224). Speeding accounted for 28.9% of Alabama’s traffic deaths; for Tennessee, the figure was 18.7%.
The comparison shows that overall road fatalities and speeding risk are separate issues. A state can feature a comparatively high death toll without having a significant speeding problem. Total crash numbers alone never tell the full story.
The numbers also don’t tell us the age or gender of the victims.
The Proportion of Victims: Gender and Age
Of 2024’s 11,272 speeding-related deaths that featured a record of the gender of the victims, men accounted for 8,526 (75.6%), while women accounted for 2,746 (24.4%), meaning male speeding crash victims suffered a 3.1-to-1 fatality ratio.
Although the gap was broadly consistent, some states were subject to wider disparities. Of states recording high death totals, Ohio recorded the widest gap: men outnumbered women more than 5 to 1, with Wyoming (5 to 1) and South Dakota (4.5 to 1) also showing wider-than-average disparities.
Vermont featured the narrowest gap (roughly 1.5 to 1), while Alaska and Nebraska featured a ratio of around 2.2 to 1. Missouri also fell below the national average with a rate of 2.6 men to 1 woman.
The consistency of a clear gender divide (however pronounced or narrow) suggests a broad behavioral pattern linked to higher male levels of risk-taking, mileage driven, and exposure to high-speed or nighttime driving.
In terms of victim ages, drivers and passengers aged between 25 and 34 represented the largest share of speeding deaths (22.4%), followed by those aged between 35 and 44 (16.5%).
Adjusted by raw numbers (for a relatively low proportion of drivers on the road), the data puts younger drivers as those most at risk: those aged between 21 and 24 averaged 332 deaths per year, followed by those aged between 16 and 20 (310). (Combined, drivers and passengers aged under 25 accounted for 29.2% of all speeding-related deaths.)
These numbers exceed those recorded for drivers aged between 25 and 34 (253), 35 and 44 (187), 45 and 54 (130), 55 and 64 (103) and 65 and 74 (70).
Missouri figures closely followed the national trend. Drivers and passengers aged under 25 accounted for 28.6% of speeding deaths; those aged between 25 and 34 and 35 and 44 followed with respective rates of just over 21% and nearly 20%.
The demographic pattern is clear: speeding-related deaths most heavily involve young adults, particularly young men. Men represented three-quarters of speeding fatalities, with drivers aged between 16 and 24 carrying the highest proportional risk.
U.S. Speeding Deaths: Some Variability, Plus Consistent Factors
Speeding remains one of the country’s most preventable causes of traffic death. And speeding just isn’t worth the risk: a University of Minnesota study of 120 million journeys found that drivers who follow speed limits lose just 54 seconds on an average 28.6-mile commute (compared to speeding drivers).

There were also 11,288 speeding-related crash fatalities, at an average of nearly 31 deaths a day. Texas again led with 1,496 deaths, while Montana had the highest population-adjusted death rate (7.73 per 100,000). Nearly 46% of speeding deaths occurred between May and September.
Overall, speeding contributed to 592,753 crashes in 2024, including 368,854 property-damage crashes and 213,696 injury crashes, as well as the 10,203 fatal crashes. While fatal and injury crashes peaked in May, property-damage crashes peaked in January. This confirms that speeding risk changes with conditions: winter increases lower-severity collisions, while summer speeds make crashes deadlier.
Vehicle speed data shows many fatal crashes occur near normal road speeds (55mph was the most commonly recorded fatal crash speed). However, 19% of vehicles with known speeds were traveling at 70 mph or faster, including more than 1,000 above 90 mph and 587 above 100 mph.
Road design also shapes outcomes. Rural areas feature about 20% of the population yet account for over 40% of traffic deaths. Higher speeds, limited lighting, fewer barriers and slower emergency response times mean rural crashes are more likely to involve fatalities. Montana, Wyoming and New Mexico combine high speeding fatality rates with large rural death shares.
Demographics reveal another clear pattern. Men accounted for 75.6% of speeding-related deaths, dying at roughly three times the rate of women. And while drivers aged between 25 and 34 represented the largest share of deaths overall (22.4%), younger drivers suffered the highest level of risk. Drivers aged between 21 and 24 averaged 332 speeding deaths per year, followed by drivers aged between 16 and 20 (310).
“The most surprising numbers in this study aren’t the raw numbers, they’re the ratio comparisons,” said a Wettermark Keith spokesperson. “For every fatal speeding crash, there are 21 injury crashes and 36 property damage only wrecks. Overall, speeding deaths disproportionately involve young men, rural roads and warmer weather. And the data makes it clear: speeding is not just a matter of isolated reckless behavior, and speeding-related crashes involve a combination of factors determined by road design, state differences and individual driver choices.
Ultimately, this study clearly shows which areas would benefit from the closest focus regarding safety messaging, education and enforcement efforts.
