Florida is home to one of the largest veteran populations in the United States, with approximately 1.4 million veterans residing in the state. Recent data shows that a little over half a million Florida veterans either receive or are eligible for VA disability compensation.
If you’re a disabled veteran in Florida, you may be eligible for benefits beyond what the federal VA offers. Navigating state programs can be confusing and complex, especially while managing a service-connected disability. Learn what benefits are available such as property tax exemptions and education waivers, and how you can apply for them.
VA Disability Benefits Eligibility Requirements
Most Florida state benefits depend on your disability rating which is set by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. To access many of Florida’s state benefits, you’ll need to provide:
- DD-214 Form
- VA Benefit Summary Letter
- Proof of Florida Residency (e.g. driver’s license, voter registration, or utility bill)
If you haven’t established your disability rating yet, your first step is contacting a Veteran Service Officer (VSO) at one of Florida’s Veterans’ Service Officer Sites. They can help you file your initial claim with the VA.
Property Tax Exemptions
One of the best financial benefits Florida offers is full property tax exemption for veterans with a permanent and total service-connected disability rating of 100%. This exemption applies to your primary residence and up to one acre of land. Who qualifies for full property tax exemption?
- Veterans with a 100% Permanent and Total (P&T) rating
- Surviving spouses of service members who died in the line of duty
- Quadriplegic veterans
- Legally blind, paraplegic, or hemiplegic veterans (income restrictions apply)
Any veteran with a service-connected disability of 10% or more is entitled to a $5,000 deduction on the assessment of their home for tax purposes.
To file an application for these exemptions, you need to go to your local county property appraiser’s office in Florida. You’ll need to show your VA disability letter as proof.
Transportation Benefits
Florida offers several transportation benefits for disabled veterans. These include:
- No-fee driver’s license or state ID card for 100% disabled veterans under Florida Statutes § 322.21 and § 320.084
- Free disabled veterans license plate and free vehicle registration for qualifying veterans
- Free permanent disabled parking permits. You can apply for this via HSMV Form 83039
- Toll exemptions for veterans with severe upper-limb impairments using specially equipped vehicles via FDOT Toll Permit.
Education Benefits
Florida offers education benefits for veterans and their families. These benefits include:
- The Congressman C.W. Bill Young Veteran Tuition Waiver Act eliminates out-of-state tuition for veterans, their spouses, and dependents enrolled in Florida public institutions.
- The Scholarships for Children and Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Veterans (CSDDV) program provides full tuition to:
- Dependents of veterans rated 100% P&T disabled
- Survivors of service members killed in action
- Children of veterans who are MIA or POW
Employment Benefits
The Disabled Veterans Outreach Program (DVOP) in Florida and Local Veterans Employment Representatives (LVER) offer workforce services, resume coaching, interview preparation, and specialized support for military spouses through the Military Family Employment Program.
Recreation Benefits
Eligible veterans in Florida can get free or discounted access to state parks, reduced hunting and fishing license fees, and discounts on certain recreational programs. These benefits help veterans and their families enjoy Florida’s beautiful outdoors.
You can apply for state park passes in person at any Florida State Park with a staffed ranger station. Hunting and fishing licenses are available through MyFWC Florida Fish and Wildlife.
Veterans can also take advantage of Operation Outdoor Freedom which offers free hunting, fishing, and recreational trips for wounded veterans. Call (863) 578-1894 to learn more.

Florida also operates seven state-run veterans’ nursing homes for eligible veterans requiring skilled care.
