Staying Safe During COVID-19 In Alabama

As one of Alabama’s most trusted attorneys, we feel a genuine connection to all of our clients throughout Alabama, and we care about their wellbeing and health amidst the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). The ongoing social distancing measures have left all of us with lowered spirits and heightened anxiety, as we await the next right step from Governor Kay Ivey. As of April 14, Alabama had approximately 3,900 confirmed cases and around 100 deaths––showing that staying at home is crucial now more than ever.

Here’s five ways you and your family can stay safe during COVID-19 in Alabama.

#1: STAY SAFE BY STAYING HOME

A few months ago, as COVID-19 was just getting started in the United States, salons, barbershops, theaters, casinos, shopping outlets, and sports centers started heeding precautions, closing their businesses, and canceling their events––some later than others. Now, through April 30, all non work-related functions, activities, and businesses must remain closed. This includes gatherings of 10 or more people.

Kay Ivey urges Alabamians to heed her warnings, as this time is imperative to flattening the curve and mitigating the spread of COVID-19. To help support small businesses, we recommend using no-contact methods such as curbside pickup and delivery.

While you’re at home, it’s also important to sanitize high-touch surfaces such as countertops, lightswitches, door knobs, cell phones, keys, wallets, and more. Also, wash your hands frequently with soap and water.

#2: LISTEN TO PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS

Just hearing safety precautions is not enough if you don’t adhere to them. Medical professionals and virologists are working tirelessly to learn more information about the novel coronavirus––listen to them first and foremost. For coronavirus safety measures from respected health organizations, visit the World Health Organization (WHO) coronavirus public health website.

Also, instead of relying solely on major news outlets for information, make sure to stay up-to-date with specific COVID-19 happenings in Alabama by checking in with official statements from Governor Kay Ivey.

#3: ONLY ACCESS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IF YOU NEED TO

According to the BJCTA, a Trespass and Ban Policy has been implemented on all MAX transits in Birmingham, Alabama. This policy states that only certain essential workers––first responders, medical professionals, and those traveling to grocery stores or doctor’s appointments may ride on public transportation.

Per the BJCTA, “we want all passengers to feel safe and respected while using our MAX transits in the Birmingham metropolitan area.” These safety measures are put in place for the safety and wellbeing of all passengers of MAX Transit.

Again, people who are performing non-essential tasks are urged to stay home.

#4: BEWARE OF TRUCKERS ON THE ROAD

There is always a high demand for commercial truckers, and this demand has only increased since COVID-19. In fact, a decades-old Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulation that limits how many hours a trucker can be on the road was recently lifted due to the high demand for delivered goods from COVID-19.

An 11-hour regulation used to be in place to prevent casualties on the road for truck drivers, but has now been extended to limitless time on the road––meaning increased risk for drowsy, exhausted truck drivers, and an increase in risk of collisions––putting other drivers at risk.

If you happen to be on the road commuting or running essential errands, please pay attention to any truck drivers in the vicinity. You don’t want to be in a potentially fatal car accident in the midst of a pandemic.

#5: PAY CLOSE ATTENTION WHILE WALKING IN THE CITY

If you’re taking the time during quarantine to walk to pick up errands, please be mindful of traffic in the streets. Always pay attention to changing traffic signals, and never look at your phone while crossing the street.
