Nursing Home Neglect: What Are the Warning Signs?

Nursing homes can provide a safe, welcoming environment for elderly loved ones, and many times, a nursing home is the best option for an aging parent who can no longer live alone. But nursing home neglect is an unfortunate reality — and your elderly loved one may not be able to communicate the problem, or they may not even be aware of it.

Obviously, it’s important to stay vigilant about the conditions of your loved one’s nursing home. But what should you look for specifically — and when is it time to report neglect to the police?

Red Flags that May Signal Nursing Home Neglect

Whenever you visit your loved one in the nursing home, look for the following signals that neglect may be happening:

  • Fall injuries (signaled by bruising or cuts)
  • A withdrawn personality
  • Bedsores
  • Weight loss due to dehydration or malnutrition
  • Sudden changes in behavior that have no obvious cause
  • Poor maintenance of the facility
  • Escape attempts on the part of your resident

If you notice any of these things, further investigation is necessary to determine whether or not nursing home neglect has taken place. If you believe that your loved one may be in danger, contact the police immediately so that they can assess the situation.

Suspect Neglect? Don’t Hesitate

Many people are hesitant about investigating possible neglect because they don’t want to jump to conclusions or make life hard for their loved one by “getting on the nursing home’s bad side.” The problem with not acting quickly, though, is that it could mean life or death for your resident.
